Read to a “pawsome” reading dog at your library

The Hernando County Public Library System (HCPLS) announces the launch of a new program for children: “Read with Jesse & Turbo”, featuring two therapy dogs that have been trained to allow children to read to (9)

All reading sessions are free of charge but registration is required for each reader and is provided via our online calendar in 15-minute slots. Limit one child per 15-minute session plus one sibling or friend, if desired.

“We are so thankful for the volunteers that will be bringing their therapy dogs to our libraries”, said Susan Kiley, Library Services Manager for HCPLS. “Reading to therapy dogs can help reluctant readers by reducing their anxiety about reading aloud. Children focus on the dog and begin to feel less self-conscious about reading. The connection with these dogs can have a lasting impact fostering a love of reading and lifelong literacy.”

This program is made possible through dedicated volunteers with dogs trained and certified through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, Inc.
