New traffic pattern for Cortez Blvd and Ft. Dade Ave. intersection

The Florida Department of Transportation announced that a new traffic pattern will begin Monday, August 14th, 2017 at the intersection of CortezCortez & Fort Dade Boulevard (SR-50) and Fort Dade Avenue (CR-484). As a countermeasure to multiple recent crashes at the intersection, the full median opening on Cortez (SR-50) will be converted to a directional median opening. The new configuration will be constructed in such as fashion as to only allow vehicles on SR-50 to make a left turn onto Fort Dade. Vehicles traveling northbound or southbound on Fort Dade will be prohibited from making a left turn or a through movement and will be forced to make right turns only. U-turn openings both east and west of the Fort Dade intersection will be provided. In a combined effort with FDOT to help improve safety, Hernando County will be adding thermoplastic rumble strips on Fort Dade Avenue, north of the intersection. To achieve a properly functioning directional median, the through lane will be eradicated. The right turn lane will be kept and marked to only allow right turn movement
