Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired & Blind of Hernando County

lighthouse1The Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that provides vision rehabilitation and adjustment to blindness services to people of all ages (from babies to seniors) who have experienced vision impairment. Individuals and families who experience blindness or loss of vision often experience a loss of hope and self-confidence. Through individual adjustment to blindness counseling, participation in support groups, independent living classes, orientation and mobility training, job readiness training, learning Braille and computer-related assistive technology, and recreational activities, persons who are visually impaired are able to find possibilities in what seemed an impossible situation.

The mission of the Lighthouse is to provide persons who are visually impaired and blind with the skills needed to achieve their maximum independence. Residents of Pasco, Hernando and Citrus counties who are experiencing significant vision loss and who demonstrate the need for vision rehabilitation training are eligible for services. Each program is individualized to meet the client’s specific needs. Free programs and services include:

  • Independent Living Skills Classes—Adaptive daily living skills to maximize home and personal management
  • Orientation and Mobility—Fall prevention, sighted guide technique, use of the white cane, use of public transportation
  • Assistive Technology/Computer Training—Using screen magnification or screen reader software
  • Braille
  • Counseling and Referral
  • Job Readiness, training and job placement
