Hernando County Government together with the Children’s Advocacy Center of Hernando County have turned the west lawn of the historic courthouse blue for the month of April to promote Child Abuse Prevention Month. In addition to the blue lighting, gardens of silver and blue pinwheels have been placed throughout the county as the national symbol of child abuse prevention. The goal of this “Pinwheels for Prevention” program is to raise awareness of healthy child development, positive parenting practices and the types of concrete support families need within their communities.
Unfortunately, Hernando County has seen an increase in the severity of child abuse cases over the last year. There were more than 2,500 children in our county who were the subject of child abuse investigations.
At the Tuesday, April 10 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners will proclaim April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and encourage all residents to engage in activities that strengthen families and communities to provide the optimal environment for healthy childhood development.
Child Abuse Prevention Month is possible through a collaboration among the Prevent Child Abuse Florida, the Children’s Advocacy Center of Hernando County, a program of Mid Florida Community Services, Inc., Florida Department of Children and Families and Ounce of Prevention
