Hernando County Commissioners approved a motion to investigate the exploration of the construction of a federally-funded gun range in the county. The proposal was put forth by Commissioner Steve Champion, owner of American Gun and Pawn, in Brooksville.
Other commissioners agreed that a federally-funded range should be looked into and could be beneficial to the area. However, there are some residents who want Champion recused from the process because they feel he has a direct conflict of interest, since his business is a gun store. Champion acknowledged that he has wanted to build a shooting range, but that the $2 million price tag was out of his financial reach. If this public range became a reality, 90% of the funding would come from federal dollars, 10% from the county budget.
