Hernando County Sheriff wants to grow his budget, even in the face of county general fund deficit

Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis has asked for a $2.78 million increase from the county’s beleaguered general fund for his 2020 spending plan, citing law enforcement’s expanding needs and responsibilities in a growing community.Sheriffs Office

He would spend the additional dollars on four and a half new positions, increases in employee pay and benefits, and replacing vehicles, among other expenses.

The sheriff’s request comes as county commissioners want to reduce or at least hold the line on costs. They are grappling with a general fund deficit estimated between $9 million and $11 million in recent months.
