Hernando County Detention Deputy Pulls Man from Burning Vehicle

On January 4th Detention Deputy Bobby Stalvey was assigned to drive to the Manatee County Detention Center to pick up a truck load of surplus food supplies. The Hernando County Detention Center participates with the Manatee County Detention Center, along with other detention centers in the state, to keep food costs down.

At approximately 8:45 a.m. while driving southbound on I-75 at mile marker 249.5 in Hillsborough County, Deputy Stalvey observed a white Chevy Trailblazer leave the roadway, crash into the guard rail, bounce off the guard rail, then turn onto its passenger side. Deputy Stalvey crossed over I-75 to assist the driver of the vehicle. Other drivers also stopped to help. As Deputy Stalvey approached the Trailblazer, he observed the undercarriage on fire. Deputy Stalvey quickly jumped up onto the driver’s side of the Trailblazer and observed one male occupant in his middle 30’s. The male, who was wearing a safety belt, was hanging there, attempting to free himself. Deputy Stalvey identified himself and with the assistance of two citizens, they were able to lift the 6ft tall 250lb male out of the vehicle. Shortly after removing the victim from the vehicle, Hillsborough County Fire/Rescue and Sheriff’s Office arrived and took control of the scene. Deputy Stalvey is being recognized for placing himself in harm’s way to assist a citizen in need.
