Hernando County Animal Services Pet Adoption Information

adoptionHernando County Animal Services is the local animal control center located at 19450 Oliver Street in Brooksville, FL. Animal Services continuously receives friendly, adorable animals who need loving homes. Every year Animal Services euthanizes healthy, adoptable animals because there are not enough homes for them all. Last year Animal Services euthanized 3,590 animals. If you are looking for a new pet, please consider rescuing an animal rather then buying from a breeder. The misconception that all shelter animals are abused, damaged, old, or sick is simply untrue. Many of the animals are found as strays and have been cared for and trained up until that point in their lives and others come from private homes where to owner can no longer care for them or has passed away. Puppies and kittens are often available. All animals older than 8 weeks of age are vaccinated for rabies, heartworm tested (dogs), FIV/FeLV tested (cats), given a general dewormer and deflea, and are sterilized. If you are a Hernando County resident, you also receive a free one-year Hernando County Animal License when adopting. If you would like to meet the available animals Hernando County Animal services is open from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and form 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Just stop in anytime and the staff will be happy to help you! You can also view some of the available animals by clicking here! They are closed on Sundays, Mondays, and holidays. Adoption rates are as follows:

  • Puppies and dogs under 25 pounds are $70
  • Adult dogs over 25 pounds are $50
  • Heartworm positive and senior dogs are $25
  • Kittens are $40
  • Adults cats are $20

In order to be considered for adoption, you are required to complete an application for the animal you are interested in. All adoptions require an approved application. To save time, you can download an adoption application to fill out and bring with you on your visit at http://www.hernandocounty.us/animal/requestinfo.htm. HCAS cannot maintain a “wish list” and cannot provide callbacks when particular “wanted” animals (i.e. purebreds, specific colors, puppies, kittens, etc.) arrive at the shelter so please continue to check with the shelter if you are looking for a particular type of animal. Please call (352) 796-5062 for additional information.

If you are interested in helping to save animals and have the time to donate, there are volunteer openings available.
Please visit the County’s website at http://www.hernandocounty.us/cr/volunteer.htm to complete a volunteer application or contact (352) 796-5062 for more information.
