After so much turmoil it’s great to be able to announce some progress being made at Hernando County Animal Services! The facility is now accepting applications for volunteers and in an effort to increase adoptions and transfers to rescues the Board of Commissioners approved opening the shelter on Saturdays. HCAS was frequently criticized for their weekday-only schedule as many potential adopters work during those hours and have no way to make it to the shelter. Critics repeatedly voiced the opinion that weekend hours were necessary to save more lives….and they were heard!
Hernando County Animal Services is now open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The facility will be closed to the public on Sunday and Monday but staff will continue to feed and care for animals on those days as well.
Anyone interested in adopting/rescuing an animal may visit the shelter to meet the available animals. An application must be completed (click here to download) prior to adopting. The cost to adopt an unaltered dog is $50 with $25 refunded upon proof of spay/neuter and rabies shot. PetLuv (a clinic a few blocks away) will provide adopters with free spaying/neutering, rabies shot, defleaing and deworming. Heartworm test and microchips are low-cost and all dogs receive a 6-in-1 and bordetella vaccine at the shelter. The cost to adopt an unaltered cat is $40 with $20 refunded upon proof of spay or neuter. PetLuv provides the same services (free spaying/neutering, rabies shot, defleaing and deworming) for cats and Hernando County residents also receive a free one year Hernando County Animal License.
