List of Hurricane shelters in Hernando County

152Shelters are open at the following locations:

  • West Hernando Middle School, 14325 Ken Austin Parkway, Brooksville, 34613, is open for general population. – Pet friendly shelter. Please see below for additional info/tips for bringing a pet to the shelter.
  • Explorer K-8, 10252 Northcliff Blvd., Spring Hill, 34608, is open to general population.
  • Nature Coast Technical High School at 4057 California St., Spring Hill, FL 34604 is at capacity for pets as of 10:00 a.m. September 10th. They are still accepting people though! 
  • Challenger K-8, 13400 Elgin Blvd., Spring Hill, 34609, is at capacity for general public as of 7 p.m. Sept. 9. They are accepting special needs only. Call the special needs registry at (352) 754-4083 to request transportation if needed. Please note that the special needs shelter at Challenger K-8 does not accept pets unless they are certified service animals. If you are evacuating to the special needs shelter and have a pet(s), Hernando County Animal Control will transport your pet(s) to Hernando County Animal Services. Please call (352) 754-6830 to arrange transportation of your pet(s).
  • Hernando High School, 700 Bell Ave., Brooksville, 34601, – AT CAPACITY AND CLOSED AS OF 9/9/17 @ 8:00 p.m. 
  • D.S. Parrott Middle School at 19220 Youth Dr., Brooksville, FL 34601 – AT CAPACITY AND CLOSED AS OF 9/9/17 @ 10:00 a.m. 

Tips for shelter residents :

  • Bring identification.
  • Eat prior to arrival.
  • Bring air mattress or sleeping bag, cots will not be provided.
  • Bring medicines, blanket/sheet, snacks, water and personal hygiene products.
  • Make every effort to carpool due to limited parking at schools.
